Practicing for Man Overboard

It seems there are many ways to operate in a Crew Overboard (COB) situation. Depending on the wind & conditions.

The consensus however, seems to be that the best way to approach a Person in the Water is from leeward, so that you don’t accidentally float over them & you have the ability to “Luff the Sails” to kill power going into the wind.

Today’s drill came at an impromptu moment, as we spotted a floating tennis ball during our sail.

The crew practiced designating a single person as the “pointer”, as well as allowing each crew member to get a chance on the helm approaching the tennis ball.

After many many circles, and the help of a large Gaf Hook, the crew finally rescued our 5th crew member Wilson.

Wilson remains a valued part of the crew, spending his long summer days on the OCSC boat.
